Scientists say they have found more evidence that a single deer tick common in the woods and grasslands of Minnesota and northern Wisconsin can simultaneously transmit three or more infections, including Lyme disease, to humans.
The combination of infections and symptoms might explain the wide variation in the severity and the duration of what is commonly known as Lyme disease, said Dr. David Persing, director of the Mayo Clinic's microbiology laboratory in Rochester, Minn.
In Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, it appears that co-infection with Lyme disease is likely to involve ehrlichiosis, also a tick-borne bacterial infection. The third type, ...
