Softer baseballs and batting helmets with face guards might cause as many injuries as they prevent, said local youth baseball officials who made their own pitch for safety Wednesday.
A study released this week by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said that the 100,000 injuries suffered annually in youth baseball games could be significantly reduced if breakaway bases, batting helmets with face guards and softer baseballs were used. The study received national media attention and prompted discussion Wednesday among coaches and parents.
