1/3 An old-timer, identifiable by his pale-green shirt, was involved in a lengthy conversation with a younger woman in downtown Watkins. Fifteen minutes later, the man had moved 100 feet down the sidewalk, and now he was talking to another old-timer.
A visiting reporter decided that the man had to be the village crier - the person who has all of the up-to-date information on the town and its residents.
"You've got that wrong," said Jim Carroll, the man in the pale-green shirt. "I'm here to find out what's going on in town. I left here in 1942, when I was 17. I get back once in a while, to see how the town has changed."
