- Base color: The predominant tonality of an existing color, for example, gold-based brown, or blond with a neutral base.
- Bleach and tone, or double process: Technique requiring two separate procedures in which hair is decolorized or prelightened before color is applied. Used to achieve superlight blond hair (think Marilyn Monroe or Madonna).
- Blonding: Lightening the hair.
- Brassy tone: Red, orange, or gold tones in hair.
- Color base: The combination of dyes that make up the tonal foundation of a specific hair color.
- Color mixing: Combining two or more shades for a custom color.
