The Hennepin County Board agreed Thursday to buy the Augsburg Fortress publishing property in downtown Minneapolis as the site for a new jail.
But even as they celebrated the possibility of overcoming a 10-year problem of jail overcrowding, state corrections officials were warning that the current cramped jail in Minneapolis City Hall cannot continue to be used without significant improvements. County officials had hoped to use the Augsburg site as a 270-bed booking facility for suspects and continue to use the old 509-bed jail for more cases of long-term pretrial detention.
