If Vietnam as a whole surprises with its beauty, Hanoi surprises even more. The capital retains the mood and architecture of French colonial rule, and its many lakes and cooler weather make it feel surprisingly like Minneapolis on a summer day. Other northern places are just as striking.

Hanoi was a city to which I brought no expectations, no prepainted mental pictures, not even leftover images from the war, when our government was pummeling it with air strikes.
Other Asian capitals had auras around them, streamers of mystery and romance that - accurately or not - I had attached to exotic names like Shanghai and Delhi and Lhasa long before ...
