Bill Johnson has an orchid fact that makes Minnesotans beg for more.
Here it is: Minnesota has 43 native forms of orchids, while deprived old Hawaii has only seven.
It's the truth. Johnson has been photographing Minnesota wild orchids for more than 15 years, very seriously for eight years. Still he has made pictures of only 17 of the 43 varieties.
That rarity intrigues Johnson. "You may be looking at something that exists nowhere else on Earth," he said. It's the thrill of the hunt, in addition to the challenge of nature photography, that motivates him to roam Minnesota wilderness with his camera, from spring through late September.
