Joe Dowling opened his tenure as artistic director of the Guthrie Theater last month with Anton Chekhov's "The Cherry Orchard." Color it pink and white. Color it Russian.
With the opener out of the way, Dowling is coming back with a double dose of something much closer to his heart and roots: Oliver Goldsmith"s "She Stoops to Conquer" and Brian Friel's "Philadelphia, Here I Come." Color them green. Color them Irish.
Friel and "Philadelphia" get a brighter green in recognition of their indisputable Irishness while Goldsmith, though born in Ireland, was an Anglo-Irishman.
