They came from small towns like Avon and Albany and from the rolling fields and wooded countryside west of St. Cloud.
On a hazy, muggy evening as summer gave its last gasp, they came to conclude a summer of shooting and - for many - to polish their shots one last time before hunting season.
The attraction this night, as it is now in dozens of places around Minnesota: sporting clays. The sport, which involves shooting clay targets with a shotgun while in simulated hunting situations, has grown in recent years. Courses have sprouted up in every corner of the state.
