From the beginning, Eden House took only folks who were nearly down for the count, executive director Dan Cain says.

First came the vets who'd traded the morass of Vietnam for that of heroin. Then the felons. Then single mothers on cocaine. And kids who get high inhaling the fumes of color markers, White-Out or industrial cleansers.

"A last-ditch place? I'd say that's accurate," Cain said as Eden House - expanded and renamed Eden Programs over the years - today celebrates a quarter-century of spreading sobriety.
