Many months after everyone and their neighbor in Eden Prairie first heard the rumors, Dayton Hudson Corp. Wednesday finally made it official: A Dayton's will open at Eden Prairie Center late in summer 1998.
In Minnesota, earning a Dayton's is a kind of rite of passage for a city. And for Eden Prairie, an affluent suburb with no definable downtown, it sparks a massive and much-needed renovation of its biggest shopping center.
"This shopping mall was built ahead of its time when the city was young and struggling," Eden Prairie Mayor Jean Harris said. "And over the years it [the center] has lost its vitality even as the city grew in population and per capita income."
