F. Melius Christiansen was a first-year student at a Minneapolis college, a talented musician who loved to play well into the night.
"His busy life with almost nightly appearances as a soloist soon reduced him to a state of pale fatigue," according to one account of his life. "The prescription of the doctor he consulted was, `Quit school for six weeks and drink beer.' "
No, this wasn't some University of Minnesota rocker seeking medical advice from a fraternity brother who was "thinking about" taking a premed class. It was 1892, and Christiansen was at Augsburg College, where in time he would write lyrical gospel songs in Norwegian.
