Earl L. Nelson, 82, of Maplewood, a jack-of-all-trades who studied engineering, law and art, died Thursday of leukemia at United Hospital in St. Paul.
Nelson was born in Fargo, N.D., where he graduated from high school. He attended North Dakota State College, but left to serve in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Later he received a civil engineering degree.
In 1958 he moved to Minnesota to be civil engineer for the village of Maplewood. He began working for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the early '60s, dealing with construction at smaller airports in the metro area. He retired in 1976.
