Jim Wacker met with his assistant coaches late Sunday afternoon, ready to discuss the future. What his assistants saw was a pale, gaunt, 59-year-old man clearly showing the strain of a recent battle with a flu-like virus and a six-game losing streak.
Wacker candidly asked his coaches what the future would hold if the Gophers could win their final two games of 1996 to finish with a 5-6 record. Two victories would mean Wacker could retain his job for another season, and in the process save the jobs of his nine assistant coaches.
