People who take up back-yard bird feeding for the first time are often tempted to hassle or fight with squirrels.
The smart person who feeds back-yard birds doesn't do this very long. And here's why.
As soon as the sunflower seeds appear, the first to know are squirrels. Within seconds of offering sunflowers, the novice feeder of birds will charge squirrels with trespassing and theft plus the destruction of private property (usually one of those high-priced plastic feeders guaranteed to be indestructible, which is then gnawed to smithereens).
This does not make for a happy neighborhood.
