Once it smelled of smoke and burnt wood. Now it smells of sawdust, stain and fresh paint.
Once the sight of ashes, charred rubble and broken glass overshadowed the happy memories of baptisms, confirmations and weddings.
Now the work of carpenters and electricians offers hope for future celebrations.
"It kind of shows what we can do if we work together," said Rick Fogel, 45, who was baptized and confirmed at Westbrook's Grace Lutheran Church.
"You don't realize how much you love something until all of a sudden you don't have it. We had it and we lost it, and soon we'll have it back again."
