MAINZ, Germany (AP) - Muslim rebels holding 21 hostages in the Philippines say they are financed by suspected terrorist Osama bin Laden, who is wanted by the United States for the bombing of two US embassies in East Africa in 1998, German television said.
ZDF national television said the rebel chief with the fantasy name "Commander Robot," had spoken to one of its reporters on Jolo island and said Bin Laden provided them financial backing.
The station said a ZDF team was also allowed contact with the hostages, including Renate Wallert, who is in poor health. Wallert's husband and son are the other two German hostages.
