Barbara Frischmuth's latest novel, Die Schrift des Freundes, is one of the first by an Austrian to deal with the situation of Turks in contemporary Austria. By the same token, this is not a completely new topic for Frischmuth (see WLT 70:2, p. 337). The novel connects thematically with her earlier academic work on Turkish literature and her first novel, Das Verschwinden des Schattens in der Sonne (1973), the tale of a young Austrian doctoral candidate researching in Turkey.
