Gail Finney's contribution to the Twayne World Authors Series admirably provides the concise critical
introduction, interpretation, and discussion of an individual author's work that is the aim of that series. Finney deftly sketches Christa Wolf's life - childhood under Nazism in what is now Poland, university days in Leipzig, marriage and family - and her increasingly celebrated status in the former East Germany and abroad.
