Being African American, overweight, and having a family history of diabetes put Lorraine Kemp at high risk for developing gestational diabetes while pregnant. (The type of diabetes brought on during pregnancy, thus the name gestational diabetes). Due to her high risk, Lorraine was tested for diabetes at nine weeks of gestation. Her hemoglobin AlC, an indicator blood sugar levels over the past three to four months, was 17 (normal is 5-8). "My first reaction was 'You must be joking.'
