With its fragrant, cone-shaped mass of blue or white flowers, the lilac is one of America's most popular ornamental shrubs, an inspiration to poets like Walt Whitman and T. S. Eliot and enthralling to generations of gardeners.
"My grandfather was a nurseryman and the lilac was one of his specialties," said Jack Alexander, lilac expert at Boston's Arnold Arboretum. "His father grew lilacs, too."
Alexander has been a plant propagator at the Arnold Arboretum for 24 years, encouraging seeds to germinate and taking care of tender baby flora - especially lilacs.
