Along I-65, a four-lane stretch of highway connecting Alabama's two largest cities of Birmingham and Montgomery, is the heart of peach country.
Urban Chilton County boasts more than 650 farms - most of them producing peaches. The four communities of Chilton County produce 10 million pounds of peaches annually.
And as if that were not enough to give the area its self- proclaimed title, the city of Clanton built a peach of a water tower standing 120-feet high as a tribute to the bountiful industry. The tower "lets tourists know you're in peach country," said Jim Durbin, owner of Jim Durbin Farms in Clanton.
Because peaches are such a big industry ...
