HERPES simplex is the name of a virus that can cause cold sores or genital sores. You can get it on whichever bit of skin is infected.
It's called a cold sore on the face but it can be on the genitals or anywhere else. Cold sores are often due to a mother passing on the virus to her children through kissing.
In genital herpes, the virus is transmitted through infected skin coming into contact with a partner's skin, for example during sex or from mouth to genitals during oral sex.
