GRAEME Welch scored his first County Championship half-century of the season as Warwickshire took early control at The County Ground.
Welch's excellent stroke-playing 50 included 10 fours and came off only 59 balls in 88 minutes.
Northants' Devon Malcolm, a veteran of 40 England Tests, and Darren Cousins were finding plenty of movement with the ball in the early stages. Malcolm opening the bowling in extraordinary style, 12 runs coming from the first over. His spell of six overs cost 26 runs.
