PRICES FOR peppermint oil are expected to level off after their increases during the first quarter, with little or no activity expected in either direction. Demand is also expected to be relatively flat as the market continues to face large carryovers from prior crops and high inventories from the Y2K buildup. In addition, competition from cheaper cornmint-based products from India and China is cutting into peppermint oil's traditional markets.
A broker says that prices for US peppermint oil have risen by as much as $2 per pound in recent months, and Citrus and Allied Essences, a brokerage based in Lake Success, N.Y., expects prices for peppermint oil to rise an ...
