SAN JOSE, Calif. _ The unions representing most employees of the San Jose Mercury News have set a strike deadline of noon June 23.
The five unions, which represent all but about 300 of the Mercury News' more than 1,500 employees, and the newspaper have been negotiating a new contract for almost two years. The previous contract between the two sides expired in October 1998.
The unions are negotiating jointly on economic issues such as wages and individually on a variety of other issues. The Mercury News has offered 2 percent annual pay increases; the unions are asking for a 10 percent increase, according to the Conference of Newspaper Unions, which ...
