PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. _ The last time the American golf championship came to these rocky shores on the Monterey Peninsula, an up-and-coming European seemingly had it won with six holes remaining.
An early coronation was bestowed by Jack Nicklaus, who had won the U.S. Open 20 years earlier at Pebble Beach.
"I remember exactly what he said to me," Colin Montgomerie said. "He extended his hand and said, `Congratulations on winning our championship.' I was five shots clear, and those winds off the Pacific were swirling. And I figured that if Jack Nicklaus thought it safe enough to declare me the victor, then it was all right to start feeling good."
