WASHINGTON -- The nicotine patch and other nicotinic agents have shown promise as treatments for Tourette's syndrome in preliminary clinical studies that will soon be reported in the medical literature, researchers reported at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
The patch, a delivery system for nicotine that has very little addictive potential, is known to improve attentiveness and reduce performance errors in patients with such divergent disorders as attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder Alzheimer's disease, and schizophrenia, said Edward D.
