Titanium alloys that meet or exceed current military standards for armor yet can be manufactured less expensively than current alloys have reportedly been developed at Oremet-Wab Chang, Albany, Ore. According to the company, in recent years Ti-6A1-4V alloys have been chosen as armor materials because they provide better ballistic resistance than steel or aluminum. However, the alloy with the best properties is Ti-6A1-4V ELI (extra low interstitials), which is expensive to produce because of its low oxygen requirement.
