PHOENIX, Ariz. _ After all these years, Detective Dave Miranda figures he has earned the right to remain silent about his late Uncle Ernie.
But the legacy of Ernesto Miranda, whose short life of crime here gave name to the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case that limits police interrogations, is back in the news. And so his nephew is talking about the family connection and the jokes he endures.
"A suspect will ask me, `Hey, are you going to read me your rights?' " said Dave Miranda, a 19-year veteran of the Phoenix Police Department. He settled into the chair of his tiny squad-room cubicle and rolled his eyes. "They're so witty sometimes."
