THE NURSING SHORTAGE continues to grow and enrollment in nursing schools continues to drop. Nursing offers a wide area for specialization and a "caring profession" but it can also offer low pay and benefits, the risk of serious and fatal disease due to needlesticks, and long hours with increasing rates of violence in the workplace.
Health administrators have not aggressively competed for nurses by offering salaries and benefits competitive with the business world. Historically, nurses have not demanded competitive salaries and benefits. Women continue to be paid 75 cents for every dollar a man is paid and are more likely to live in poverty as they age.
