"The objective of the 1987 Nairobi Conference to decrease the number of maternal deaths by at least half within a decade - 'is far from being achieved,' two physicians write in a commentary in the British medical journal The Lancet.
585,000 women die annually from complications of pregnancy or delivery - nearly 80,000 more than was thought when the first estimates of maternal mortality were made in the mid-1980s.
