New Version Of IP Relieves Unique Address Shortage
Imagine the U.S. Postal Service trying to deliver mail to a building without an address. That same thing will soon happen with the Internet, which quickly is running out of unique IP addresses for Web sites.
The problem is that the current standard for addresses, Internet protocol version 4, is limited by its 32-bit size to about 4 billion addresses. Although large, that number isn't going to be adequate.
A GSM carrier in Europe recently learned that lesson the hard way. The carrier plans to launch packet-data services when it upgrades its network to general packet radio service infrastructure. ...
