CHANCELLORSVILLE, Va. - Here lies a road where time has stood stock-still. Unpaved, meandering miles through Virginia woods, the road doesn't seem important - but America's future might have been shaped here.
The road is at Chancellorsville, site of the stunning - but Pyrrhic - Confederate victory in May 1863.
Few other Civil War battlefields present such a contrast between past and present. Few crowds visit. Once you leave Virginia Route 3, you re-enlist in the 19th century. Except for a few monuments and cannon in the rare meadow, all you see is woods. Antiquity surrounds you on the unpaved road, which still includes a natural ford.
