SAN FRANCISCO -- Women undergoing pelvic sonography need not be subjected to the discomfort of having a full bladder.

For decades women have been asked to fill their bladders to optimize transabdominal ultrasound. But improvements in technology and routine use of transvaginal as well as transabdominal sonography make a full bladder unnecessary, if not undesirable, in most cases, Dr. Beryl R. Benacerraf said at the annual meeting of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine.
