In the debate over abortion, lofty abstractions such as "choice" have a way of blinding us to the concrete reality of what is being chosen. So let's pause to consider what partial-birth abortion, the subject of the current dispute, is. The modifier refers to the fact that the baby is partially delivered when the abortionist penetrates her skull and sucks her brains out. British newspapers have called it a "scissors abortion"; abortionists prefer to call it a "D&X" ("dilation and extraction") abortion.
By any name, it is an enormity. And in its name, the Supreme Court is poised to commit a constitutional enormity. If it does, it will present Repub lican ...
