The 1998 centennial commemorating the inclusion of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island into a consolidated New York City sparked a renewed interest in local history. Until the publication of Gotham, the finest recent contribution to the study of this city on the Hudson had been Kenneth T. Jackson's Encyclopedia of New York City. While every library in the country will want to have a copy of this encyclopedia, every historian interested in New York will cherish the work of Burrows and Wallace.
