WASHINGTON _ Black holes, the weirdest objects in the universe, are beginning to shed some of their mystery.

Thanks to powerful new telescopes, scientists have been able to study the homes, lifestyles and feeding habits of 33 of these awesome monsters _ some in our own Milky Way, others in ancient, far-off galaxies.

"Astronomers have shifted from trying to establish the existence of massive black holes to investigating their demographics," said Holland Ford, a researcher at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
