SPOORNET, South Africa, has announced plans to lease out 12,000km of its 20,000km national rail network. The lines, which will be offered under concession to the private sector, are those which it regards as under-utilised or non-profitable.
Spoornet's newly-appointed chief executive officer, Mr Zandile Jakavulu, says he hopes that private operators will be able to operate services and maintain the infrastructure viably on the routes, most of which link provincial towns and rural areas. Passenger traffic on many of these lines has declined in the face of competition from buses and taxis.
