Like New York, jazz has always been at the heart of Woody Allen's movies. But here it finally gets to take centre stage. It's the story of Emmet Ray (Sean Penn), a now forgotten but once legendary 30s Chicago jazz swing player, judged second only to his hero, Django Reinhard, whose music was a sweet as the man himself was lowdown.
Like many a jazzman of the era, Ray supplemented his income running hookers (he preferred to be called manager rather than pimp) and had a love life as improvised as his music.
