The Gary Sanitary District, which provides wastewater treatment for most of Northwest Indiana, cleared its first hurdle in trying to get relieved of its 20-year-old debt to the federal government. The $1.5 million that the sanitary district owed to the Environmental Protection Agency from discrepancies in a 1976 grant was wiped out with
passage of a large federal spending bill in the House.The measure still needs approval from the Senate. The sanitary district obtained $34 million from the EPA in 1976 to construct and make modifications to its secondary wastewater treatment facility. But in 1978 a contractor working on the ...
