Kim Jong Il's coming-out party actually started in Pyongyang on March 5. On that day, NEWSWEEK has learned, North Korea's shadowy "great leader" dropped in at the Chinese Embassy and set out to greet his country's oldest allies. Sipping wine from a glass he brought with him, Kim toasted each embassy staffer with jokes and small talk. According to one account, provided by a businessman with close ties to the Chinese Embassy, Kim even apologized for his country's habit of failing to return railway containers used to ship goods across the border.
