EAST PROVIDENCE _ In the end, Luke Donald had to work a lot harder than expected to win the 39th Northeast Amateur Championship.
Jonathan Byrd, the defending champion, did not give up his title easily. Byrd played an outstanding final round on Sunday at Wannamoisett Country Club, forcing Donald to meet his challenge.
And meet the challenge is exactly what Donald did.
Donald, 22, a resident of High Wycombe, England, and a senior-to-be at Northwestern University, completed one of the best performances in tournament history with a gritty, even-par 69 for a 72-hole total of 8-under 268. That tied the Northeast record set by John Cook 21 years ago.
