The city of Kairouan was for centuries an important trading centre for the caravans which criss-crossed the Sahara desert. It is also celebrated as one of Islam's holy cities. And, despite its geographical location, amid harsh and arid terrain, a city of extraordinary beauty grew up as a monument to the faith of generations of devout Muslims.
