Another setback for sound science: On March 7, Secretary Glickman announced the USDA's proposed national guidelines for the labeling and marketing of organic foods. USDA'S decision was based in large measure on the volume of comments received by organic activists. While the public's views are important, rules governing food labeling and food safety must be based on sound science--and sound science cannot be determined by public opinion polling.
