One segment of the worldwide aquaculture industry is booming, but U.S. producers are not participating in significant numbers.
It's the eel business, but its size in the U.S. is so small that estimates of its catch or production and gross receipts are not even available.
Despite the lack of domestic popularity for eel meat, the worldwide demand is huge, with the global aquaculture production of eels estimated at more than 130,000 tons worth an estimated $1.3 billion a year.
Most of the production is in Asia, coming primarily from China, Taiwan and Japan.
