General Motors and Lear Corp. will jointly produce full-sized luxury vans in the fourth quarter for sale in 2001.
GM plans to build 10,000 to 15,000 Chevrolet Express LT and GMC Savana SLTs annually in Wentzville, Mo., and send them to a nearby Lear factory - most likely in Wentzville - to have complete interiors and some exterior trim installed. The vehicles then will be shipped back to GM for distribution to dealers.
The move is a first for both companies. GM has not produced a full-sized luxury van, and Lear, the world's fifth-largest auto supplier, has never installed entire interiors in production vehicles.
