The Bolshoi Ballet Seattle will see for five days next week at the Paramount Theatre is the new Bolshoi. The Bolshoi Seattle saw in 1990 at the Goodwill Arts Festival was the old Bolshoi, an unhappy, enervated company.
When the famed Russian company made its bow in the West in 1956, the impact was overwhelming. No one who saw the company then forgot the visceral excitement of its dancers. By the time the Bolshoi danced in Seattle in 1990, it was at its nadir: Dancers were leaving in droves, the repertory was stagnant and dull, artistic direction was more concerned with its authority than aesthetic vision.
