Three new transplant studies-two involving stem cells and one utilizing pancreatic islet cells-have brought researchers closer to developing new treatments for a variety of human diseases, including diabetes and spinal cord injuries, perhaps within the next 5 to 10 years.
The most basic of the studies, involving stem cells from the brains of adult mice, may hold the greatest long-term promise, while dispelling the belief that adult neural stem cells can only give rise to other nerve cells.
