WHAT IS SCLERODERMA?
The word scleroderma means hard skin. It is a chronic (long-lasting) disease that can affect your skin, joints, blood vessels and internal organs.
Scleroderma is a rare disease that affects women three to five times more often than men. It may be seen in children and the elderly, but usually starts between the ages of 30 and 50. Approximately 100,000 to 165,000 people in the United States have scleroderma.
Localized Scleroderma
Localized scleroderma mainly affects the skin. It also can affect muscles and bone, but does not affect internal organs. The two types of localized scleroderma are morphea and linear scleroderma.
